Our Profile

AHeadStart provides one-on-one and group tuition in all Maths, English, Science & Commerce subjects. AHeadStart specialises in assisting secondary school students in Years 9 to 13, particularly those studying towards New Zealand NCEA Levels 1-3. Tuition towards the Cambridge International Examinations (IGCSE) is also available. In addition, AHeadStart assists adult students in all subjects, including refresher mathematics.

AHeadStart provides personalised tuition for each individual student. The areas a student needs strengthening are identified and then a customised programme of tuition is developed. The student is provided with immediate and positive feedback to help them stay on track. Tuition begins with an initial assessment, which is followed by foundation and reinforcement.

AHeadStart is a member of the New Zealand Association for Science Education.

In addition to helping students overcome their difficulties, AHeadStart feels it is essential that students also develop sound revision skills to maximise exam achievements.

A Brief History of AHeadStart

AHeadStart was established by Melanie S A Coker in December 2007. Melanie was a top student at Christchurch Girls' High School and went on to achieve a First Class BSc(Hons) degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology at the University of Canterbury. Melanie has recently completed her PhD in biochemistry at the University of Otago, Christchurch in 2011.

During 2004 and 2005 Melanie worked for BrainMasters Ltd as a tutor of mathematics, science and chemistry for secondary school students. It was at this time Melanie discovered her enjoyment in teaching and helping students to achieve their best, beyond their own expectations. So with hands-on knowledge of the scientific process and prior tutoring experience Melanie began AHeadStart Tuition.
