Tutor News: Featured Tutor John Aitken

As demand for tuition increases towards the end of the year, we have noticed a dramatic increase in the number of students requiring help in NCEA Physics at Level 2 and Level 3.

Physics is a demanding subject which is often not well-explained in schools. This is a problem as it means that students as they do not have an understanding of the concepts and so cannot answer questions requiring written explanations of physics phenomena. This results in students struggling to gain Achieved in Physics papers.

Our featured tutor, John Aitken, specialises in Physics as well as Maths:

"My name is John Aitken and I'm in my final year studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Canterbury. I have a strong passion for tutoring, especially in the areas of physics and maths."

NCEA: Exam Preparation

I am a firm believer that the best way to prepare for NCEA exams is to do as many previous exams as possible. Unfortunately, the NZQA website can be a maze to try to find the exams you want!

Instead, go to: http://www.aheadstart.co.nz/ncea-xidc30636.html

Here you can find previous NCEA exams and their answers for all of the Maths and Science subjects, including those for 2008. Also check out the recommended books for each subject.

Learning Styles Analysis

Recently, I have found a fantastic website which provides an analysis of your learning style!

Learning styles are the way in which we perceive and remember new information. There are seven different learning styles assessed in this questionnaire. By understanding your own personal styles, you can adapt the learning process and techniques you use.

The following instructions take you to a website which is dedicated to helping you better understand learning styles, as well as providing an easy way to discover your own styles.

1. Go to:
http://www.learning-styles-online.com/inventory/userInfo.asp?groupID=3085

2. The webpage is titled Learning Styles Inventory Login for existing Users. Click on start or continue with the questions.

3. Complete all the questions by selecting:
0 if the statement is nothing like you
1 - if the statement is partially like you
2 - if the statement is very much like you

4. Once you have completed all 7 pages, press Submit.

5. Enter information into Your User Profile.
Under the Group Details: Group Code: AHeadStart
    Group Password: tuition
Once you have completed this, press View Results.

6. Once completed I will email you a list of study tips specifically suited to your preferred learning style.

Good luck to everyone for the rest of the term! See you at your lessons!
