Alice

Hey everyone! My name is Alice and I am an English, History, Biology and French tutor with AHeadStart. I am also able to tutor Level 1 Science and all NCEA levels of Music Theory if anyone is interested in that! I am a second year student at the University of Canterbury, studying a Bachelor of Law and a Bachelor of Arts, with a major in Political Science and minors in both French language and Performance Music. When I tell people what I’m studying they usually comment that it’s quite a broad range of subjects- and it is, but that’s what makes my studies so interesting!

I graduated St Andrew’s College in 2016 with a thorough understanding of what it takes to succeed in NCEA. I gained excellence endorsement in all three levels of NCEA, finishing my schooling with over 280 excellence credits. I studied a range of subjects during school and I am very familiar with the content and the skills you need to gain excellence from Level 1 to Level 3. During school I had the privilege of being a Prefect, Academic Captain and Head of Vocals. As an Academic Captain I had the responsibility of organising the LEAP Reading Programme with the Preparatory School- a tutoring programme aimed to improve the reading comprehension of year fives and sixes. I also participated in a number of Model United Nations conferences which lead me to find my passion for politics and law. My achievements at school led me to gain multiple scholarships, including the UC Excellence Scholarship, the UC Emerging Leaders Scholarship, the College of Business and Law award for Excellence, and the Leigh and Judith Pownall Scholarship for Music.

Outside of studying, I love being social, hanging out with my friends and visiting Christchurch’s many food joints. I also have a passion for music. I have sung classically and played the piano and flute for several years, and I recently gained my Grade 8 certificates in both flute and singing. I am also an executive member of the Christchurch Youth Council and I have been on a number of UN Youth Committees for organising both regional and national events.

Having both of my parents as teachers and many extended family members involved with education has been a large contributor to my interest in tutoring. I initially gained tutoring experience during school as part of the LEAP Reading Programme, but I wanted to further this with AHeadStart. I like to think of myself as an outgoing and approachable person who loves to work with students. NCEA can be a difficult system to navigate for both students and parents, and as someone who has only recently completed high school, I have a good knowledge of how the system works and how to utilise it for a student to reach their full potential.

I am friendly and patient with all students, and able to adapt to different learning styles. It is extremely rewarding to see students reach their full potential, and I look forward to helping every student gain confidence in their learning and achieve their goals.
