Adult Students - AHeadStart provides assistance for university, pre-health course students, as well as those working towards the entrance assessments for the NZ Police and Defence force.

AHeadStart aims to guide students so they reach their full potential in a positive learning environment. No matter which tutoring plan you choose, each student has their own personal tutor, so they will feel comfortable and supported.

Personalised one-on-one or small group tutorials are specifically designed to suit your needs. During each one hour session you, or your child, will have the full attention of their tutor. This gives our tutors the ability to adjust the pace, focus and goals of every lesson, resulting in optimal learning efficiency.

How does online tutoring work?

Our online sessions use either Zoom Video Conferencing or Skype   - it's up to you!  Some people choose to use GoogleMeet as well if that suits them better.
These applications are easy to use and include audio and video chat, the ability to share screens with each other, and a collaborative and interactive whiteboard.

    Online whiteboard

Zoom is the favoured online video conferencing application. It has a fantastic whiteboard function that can be used by both the tutor and student to replace pen and paper while working online. It works especially well for subjects that require calculation or diagrams, such as Mathematics, Economics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Students can take screenshots to save the information produced, but we also recommend they handwrite it into their notes, as this aids the learning process.

If students prefer to use Skype we recommend using the Web Whiteboard as a another great option. This generally requires the use of a second device to make it work well.

    Sharing screens

Most online conferencing facilities have the ability to share screens. This is very useful so that students can share with their tutor the work their teacher has planned for the year, as well as what they have been covering at school week to week.  It also allows the student to work with their tutor directly when doing online research. Tutors can also share their screen to share useful information.yuppie_50.jpg

    Students will need the following:

    • A computer, laptop, or Chromebook with speakers, microphone, and internet browser.
    • A stable high-speed internet connection.
    • A quiet room to work in without distractions.

    Optional but not required:

    • A second device, such as a tablet or second computer screen, is very handy to write on the whiteboard. This means that the student can still see their tutor on either Skype or Zoom on one screen, and any written working on the other screen.
