About Physical Education

A programme to develop skills in fitness, personal well-being and the performance and management of sport.

 

 

Physical Education
 

Physical Education is skills based, with an emphasis on developing a wide range of skills, as well as introducing concepts involving fitness, sports and training principles, leadership, sociology, and biomechanics.

At university, Physical Education is one of five majors of the Bachelor of Sport Coaching degree. This course covers both practical and theoretical aspects to further students understanding in the sociology, science, theory, and practice of sport and sport coaching.

Physiocal Education is a popular major for students wishing to take up a teaching career. Other options are to use this a stepping stone to courses such as Physiotherapy or a sports or coaching career.

NCEA Physical Education
 

Level 1
Level 1 Physical Education introduces students to key ideas involved in understanding participation and performance in sport, outdoor education, and the benefits of physical activity. It is a foundational subject for students who are interested in sport and are potentialy planning to study sport and leisure, with an aim of a career in this field. This course covers both practical and theoretical aspects of physical education.

Level 2
Level 2 Physical Education encompasses the principles and methods of training, sociology, leadership, motor-skill learning, anatomy, biomechanics and performances in a range of potential sports, including rock climing and canoe polo.

Level 2
The Level 3 Physical Education course is broken up into three main modules that cover a variety of contexts that may include netball, golf, cricket, football, triathlon and American football. There is a strong academic focus in this course with comprehensive studies of contemporary leadership, sociology, biomechanics and training principles.
