Jamila

Hi, my name is Jamila and I am currently in my second year of studying towards a Bachelor of Forestry Science, after transferring to the University of Canterbury for the 2020 academic year. In my first year at university I studied towards a conjoint BA and BSc degree at Waikato University majoring in Ecology & Biodiversity and Political Science.

In terms of my academic credentials I have endorsed NCEA with excellence  at all three levels and received NCEA Scholarship in English, Biology and Geography. In my first year of university I made the Deans’ list and received an invitation to Join Golden Key, which is an international honors society. I have received subject endorsements in all the subjects I am tutoring.

In both my secondary and tertiary studies I often found that concepts I learned in one subject could be applied to another seemingly contrasting subject, which in turn improved both my understanding and results.
I have also learned that although there will always be some subjects you enjoy more than others, a subject that you may find less enjoyable is often important in order to progress in another discipline that you do enjoy.
My goal as a tutor is to not only help students meet their academic goals, but to also help students find these correlations where they are applicable as I genuinely believe they translate to an improved academic performance.

On a personal note I enjoy hiking and will take up absolutely any opportunity to be in the outdoors, especially if it’s something I’ve never done before. Another huge passion of mine is music. I’ve performed in many different settings be it for musical stage shows, competitions, community performances or personal enjoyment. I like to play any instrument I can find but am most competent in piano and almost any  brass instrument (being a brass player is often quite literally like playing musical chairs).
Something more unique about me is that when I was younger, I took a year off school to backpack around the world with my family. This experience really shaped my passion for learning about different cultures, places, cuisines and the world in general.

I look forward to helping you achieve your academic goals!
