About Mathematics

The abstract science of number, quantity, and space, either *pure or* applied.

Mathematics is the study of such topics as quantity, structure, space, and change. Mathematicians seek and use patterns to formulate new theories and then use mathematical proofs to support or oppose these. When mathematical models are accurate and able to mimic the patterns seen in nature or human activity, then mathematical reasoning can be used to make predictions or provide insight into different phenomena.

Using both logic and abstraction, Mathematics developed from counting, measurement, the study of the shapes and motions of physical objects, and calculations. Humans have used Mathematics applied to practical uses for as long as written records exist. It can take years, or even centuries, of investigation and modelling to complete the research needed to solve complex mathematical problems.

Some mathematicians work in the field of pure mathematics, without having any application in mind. However, practical applications for insights in pure mathematics occur once the significance of the discovery is realised. Applied mathematics has led to completely new mathematical disciplines, for instance, game theory and statistics.

Mathematics is essential in many fields, including natural science, engineering, medicine, finance and the social sciences.

Mathematics is a subject that is commonly frustrating for children and adults alike, despite being used in almost all aspects of every day life. This means it’s so important for every one to understand what mathematics is about and the ability to tackle it.

Our primary and intermediate school students, as well as adults, develop important Mathematics skills such as:

- Basic facts, including times tables
- Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing

**Level 1**

The curriculum of Level 1 Mathematics comprises three externally assessed topics, the Algebra MCAT assessed in September without calculators, and numerous internally assessed topics. Students learn a selection of these topics based on their ability determined in Year 9 & 10, as well as their particular school's or teacher's preferences. Students with a stronger ability will complete more algebra-based external topics such as geometric reasoning and tables, equations and graphs. Students who find Mathematics more challenging will learn more statistics-based internal or external topics such as chance and data.

**Level 2**

The curriculum of Level 2 Mathematics comprises three externally assessed topics, numerous internally assessed topics. Students learn a selection of these topics based on their ability determined in Year 11, as well as their particular school's or teacher's preferences. Students with a stronger ability will complete more external topics such as algebra and calculus. Students who find Mathematics more challenging will learn more statistics-based internal or external topics such as probability.
